Split King
A split king is two separate Twin XL bases and two separate mattresses placed side by side inside one king frame. Each partner gets a fully independent base, one person can sit up reading while the other lies flat in zero gravity. The trade-off: there is a seam down the middle. You need split king sheets (or two Twin XL sets) if you want fully independent operation on each side, and you are effectively buying two mattresses.
Split-Head King
A split-head (or “flex-head”) king is one solid king mattress on a base whose upper third splits so each person can raise their head independently. The foot section moves together. The payoff: no center seam. You can use standard king sheets, and it feels like one bed. Some bedding manufacturers also offer split head fitted sheets (best for this setup) to prevent fitted sheet flexing across both sides. The limit with this setup: you cannot independently raise your legs or go full zero-gravity on just one side.
Rule of thumb: choose a split king if independent full-body positioning matters most; choose a split-head king if you want one seamless mattress and mainly care about reading or anti-snore head elevation.
Will my mattress work on an adjustable base?
An adjustable base only helps if your mattress can flex with it. Compatibility comes down to construction and profile:
- All-foam and memory foam, ideal. Flexes smoothly with every position.
